Mika Zibanejad was alone with his thoughts Thursday afternoon at Joe Louis Arena. One by one, his teammates came off the ice following practice, leaving the 18-year-old poster child for the new-look, rebuilding Ottawa Senators to scoop up the pucks and ponder his surroundings leading up to the official beginning of his NHL career Friday night.

Finally, the Senators start their season Friday night against the Detroit Red Wings, which really means a game between the students and the teachers at the Joe. What better first opponent for all those fresh faces in Ottawa uniforms than the winged-wheel machine, role model for all right-thinking NHL franchises, and the team that spawned new Senators head coach Paul MacLean.
