James Patrick O’Brien, born January 29, 1989, was the youngest player in Division I college at the University of Minnesota in 2006-07. O’Brien was drafted 29th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Picked by Ottawa for his size, shot blocking ability and penalty killing abilities, O’Brien started his first NHL game with Ottawa on December 31, 2010 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Later that year O’Brien was demoted to Sens affiliate Binghamton and was a member of the 2011 Calder Cup championship team. He was called back to Ottawa and registered his first NHL goal on February 15, 2012.

In July of 2012, the Senators re-signed O’Brien to a 2 year contract.
