Born May 31, 1990, Erik Karlsson is a Swedish defenceman playing for the Ottawa Senators. He was selected 15 overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to being drafted, Karlsson was ranked fourth among European skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service while playing for Swedish team Frölunda HC.

After a strong training camp in September 2009, the Senators announced Karlsson had made the team’s roster and would start the 2009–10 season in Ottawa. Despite one setback, he would remain in the NHL for the season and play in all of Ottawa’s playoff games.

Having recorded 25 points in 41 games, Karlsson was selected to represent the Ottawa Senators at the 2011 NHL All-Star Game.

The 2011-12 season brought more responsibility with the Sens. Karlsson responded and was named the 2012 winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman. He became only the second Swede to win the award.

Karlsson was married to girlfriend Therese on July 6, 2012, in Sweden.

The exciting defenceman will be with the Ottawa Senators for some time to come as he signed a seven-year contract extension with the Senators worth a reported $45.5 million dollars on June 19, 2012.
