Born April 20, 1990 in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Derek Grant was playing for the Langley Chiefs of the BCHL when he was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

During his two years with the Langley Chiefs, Grant scored a total of 123 points. After leaving Langley, Grant chose to play for Michigan State University. In his freshman season, he scored 12 goals and 30 points in 38 games.

The following year saw Grant leave MSU and sign an entry level contract with the Ottawa Senators. He made his professional debut with the Binghamton Sens and helped them towards a Calder Cup championship in 2011.

In February of 2013, due to numerous injuries plaguing the Ottawa Senators, Grant was called up to the NHL and made his debut in an Ottawa uniform against the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 16, 2013.
