Winning out remains the Ottawa Senators goal

Even though the Ottawa Senators are guaranteed a playoff spot, they remain committed to delivering a victory Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers in their final home game of the regular season.

The number of potential playoff scenarios are endless – you can actually get a headache trying to figure out the ifs, ands and buts based on what happens here and around the Eastern Conference Saturday and Sunday – but here are some basic scenarios.

–If the Senators pick up at least one point against the Flyers, they will be guaranteed no worse than seventh place in the East. That would mean they won’t face the Pittsburgh Penguins, widely considered to be the class of the East.

–If the Senators win against Philadelphia and in the season-ending game Sunday against the Boston Bruins, they will finish no worse than sixth in the Conference. If the Senators win both games and the Toronto Maple Leafs lose in regulation against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday, the Senators will end up fifth in the East.

–If the Senators win, the New York Rangers lose (either in regulation or overtime) and Toronto picks up at least one point against Montreal, the Senators will be guaranteed sixth spot in the East. That would ensure a first-round match-up against the Washington Capitals.

So, is all that clear now? There will be a test later.

Actually, the picture could be a little clearer come game time. The Rangers regular season ending game against the Devils begins at 3 p.m.

Craig Anderson will draw the start in goal for the Senators. It’s expected that Robin Lehner will play Sunday against Boston.

The only change to the roster from Thursday’s 2-1 overtime win over Washington is that Matt Kassian will take the place of Guillaume Latendresse. Even though the Flyers kissed the playoffs good-bye several weeks ago, they pride themselves on being a physical squad and it wouldn’t be surprising if Kassian was involved in a fight Saturday.
