Van Riemsdyk caught red-handed with Sens-style gloves

TORONTO — At the morning skate, James van Riemsdyk wore the usual blue and white practice garb of the Maple Leafs, but also what looked like Ottawa Senators hockey gloves. Red, black and white. Trade pending?

Um, no. Van Riemsyk was breaking in the Team USA gloves he will be wearing at the Sochi Olympics.

“Dion (Phaneuf) was giving me a hard time,” for the Senators colours, Van Riemsdyk said. “I just wanted to get them broken in a little bit. Loosen them up.”

Van Riemsdyk has been tough on the Senators this season, with two goals and two assists in the two games prior to Saturday, plus the shootout winner on Dec. 7 in Ottawa. He says he doesn’t think of playing well against a particular team because “every time you play them it’s a new game, teams are in different places as far as how they’re playing.”
