Torttorella has help from 2003 Cup win with Tampa Bay

When he took the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup in 2003, New York Ranger coach had Brad Richards and Ruslan Fedotenko on his team.
That’ll make them two of his key leaders during this Stanley Cup campaign, however long it lasts.
“I trust them that I won’t have to direct them to try to help,” said Tortorella.
“When you have a leadership group . . . a coach can get in the way, in directing them to this, that, the other thing.
“This is the players’ deal, and they know what’s going on in that room in certain situations that coaches don’t know, about how some guys are handling things.
“So I feel very comfortable in allowing them to take care of their business.”
Indeed, the value of Richards, Tortorella said, might be more valuable off the ice.
“Obviously we expect a lot of him on the ice, but when you get into this type of scenario, we’re going to lean on him, or the players will lean on him quite heavily as they go through some situations, some momentum swings and all that, he’s been there,” he said.
