Now you can add Jordan Staal, James Neal and Craig Adams to a Penguins lineup already missing superstar Sidney Crosby due to his concussion issues. Staal, having an outstanding season, is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a left knee injury. Neal, fifth in the NHL with 21 goals, suffered a broken foot when hit in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to New Jersey. Adams re-injured his knee during a practice Sunday. Ouch. The Penguins already lead the NHL with 210 man games lost to injury. The Penguins are 11-12-1 in their past 24 games.

Coach John Tortorella may be stealing headlines with his mouth, but his team has stunned the league, leading the Eastern Conference with a 26-9-4 record. They’re also 9-1-0 in their past 10. The Rangers are tough to beat at Madison Square Garden, where they’ve posted a 12-3-2 mark. Marian Gaborik ranks third in the NHL with 23 goals and defenceman Michael del Zotto has been outstanding, owning a plus 25 mark. Only a handful of Boston Bruins players are better.

Even after defeating Tampa Bay Saturday, the Canadiens are seven points out a playoff spot and the chances of rebounding for a playoff berth seem remote. At this point, the news outside the game is often more intriguing. Last week, GM Pierre Gauthier threw English-speaking coach Randy Cunneyworth even further under the team bus, essentially seeing the club needs to have a francophone-speaking bench boss due to language tensions. Defenceman P.K. Subban also fought with winger Tomas Plekanec at practice.
