THURSDAY VS DETROIT

With silver medals in their back pockets, Swedish teammates and Twitter besties Erik Karlsson and Daniel Alfredsson will face off in the Ottawa Senators’ first post-Olympic game (the Red Wings take on the Canadiens in Montreal the night before). There is no understating the importance of this game at this point in the season: with 23 contests remaining in their season, the Senators trail the Red Wings, who hold the final wild card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, by a single point. The Red Wings have a game in hand, however, so if the Senators somehow manage to pull off a regulation win in a back-to-back situation for their opponent, it would go a long way toward improving their playoff chances. The Wings also had 10 Olympic participants. Factor?

SUNDAY AT VANCOUVER

Of all the “outdoor” games this season, this one might have the least amount of hype attached. Beyond the fact it involves two Canadian teams, there isn’t much to latch onto here. There is pretty much zero history between these two teams in the modern era, neither squad is lighting up the league and, given it’s being played on the Wet Coast, there’s a decent chance they’ll have to close the roof at B.C. Place and play the thing indoors. Still, it’s the first opportunity for these teams to play in a stadium setting and, given the Canucks are also trailing the last wild card spot in their conference by a point, it should be a hard-fought affair. The Senators may be lucking out here, catching the uneven Canucks in a down cycle: they’ve lost seven in a row, all in regulation time. That stings.
