Switzerland remains Spezza’s home away from home for the holidays

Jason Spezza won’t be coming home for Christmas.

The Ottawa Senators star centre, who has been playing for Rapperwil-Jona of the Swiss A League during the lockout (for those of you agonizing over your Swiss hockey league pools, he has nine goals and 17 assists in 26 games) was named to Canada’s Spengler Cup roster on Friday.

The Spengler Cup runs from Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland.

Typically, Canada’s Spengler Cup roster is filled with players who have made a career out of playing in Europe or former NHLers at the tail end of their professional careers. Due to the lockout, however, there are several marquee names on the Canadian squad this time around.

In addition to Spezza, the roster includes John Tavares of the New York Islanders, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, Ryan Smyth and Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche.
