He has a long, long way to go to get back to even terms, but considering the abuse Sergei Gonchar has received for his abysmal play this season, Thursday’s plus 5 effort in the Senators 6-4 win over the New York Islanders was certainly welcome.
Gonchar, who had no points in the victory, now sits at minus 15 for the season.
It’s a brutal number, but it’s not the worst on the Senators anymore.
Chris Phillips, who has posted seven consecutive negatives in the plus/minus department (minus 10 during that span) now sits at minus 20. Filip Kuba and Erik Karlsson are also at minus 15. Nick Foligno trails all forwards at minus 14, followed closely by Mike Fisher (minus 13) and Daniel Alfredsson (minus 12).
Is there any positive news? Yes. Brian Lee is the lone Senator on the plus side of the ledger, sitting at plus 1 following Thursday’s game. Lee will start again Friday, with Chris Campoli sitting out his second consecutive game.
