New Jersey Devils (41-27-5) at Ottawa Senators (37-26-10)

Again, this is a tough one. These two teams are pretty evenly matched (with a slight edge going to the Devils), but the Senators are playing at home. After three so-so performances against bad teams, the Senators had better have some urgency in their game. If they blow it in regulation again and the Sabres win Wednesday, the gap between a playoff spot and oblivion will be just four points.

I’ll try Ottawa here to end its little malaise.

The Devils are playing their second game in as many nights, but don’t expect them to come out flat. New Jersey is 9-4-0 in the second game of back-to-backs and the Sens will need to elevate their game after some flat performances against weaker opponents.

As much as I’d like to see Ottawa win and move within one point of the sixth place Devils, Ottawa’s been playing some mundane hockey of late.

It’s Ottawa’s turn to take advantage of a team that played the night before.  The Sens have been giving up fewer gold star chances lately but have had a tough time burying their own chances. The law averages says they’ll bust out soon. I say tonight.

Sens fans should, counter-intuitively, be thankful that the Senators will be playing a team that is ahead of the standings, after losses to Montreal and Toronto last week. Ottawa seems to play to their opponent, which should mean a bump against the Devils (and hopefully the power play will wake up, too).

Okay, so maybe they just need a decent team to play against to bring their own ‘A’ game. Those last bunch of games messed up the nice lead I had accumulated here. With Jersey coming off a big game last night in NY, I’ll hope that the Sens can rise to the challenge and catch a tired team on a bit of a let down.

The brutal display against the Leafs on Saturday is almost enough to get me off the bandwagon but the Sens get a break with New Jersey coming in on a back-to-back. I’ll keep buying while the stock is low — for now.
