Philadelphia Flyers (3-0-1) at Ottawa Senators (1-4-0)

Lost in all the hullabaloo over the Ilya Bryzgalov signing this summer was a pretty great 2010-2011 campaign for the Flyers’ other “B” keeper, Sergei Bobrovsky (28-13-8, 2.59 GAA). I’m guessing he gets the nod against the struggling Sens, and I think he’ll have a big game.

Easy to pick the visitors here, and I won’t rock the boat, but the Senators have raised their level — in small bursts — against better opponents, so this might be closer than the tale of the tape.

I’ll bet you didn’t know the Senators have beaten the Flyers seven straight times at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa has outscored Philadelphia 29-13 in those games, so for whatever reason, the Flyers have problems in winning in Kanata. (Sometimes I do my research instead of just blindly picking the Sens to win).

Despite Mendes espousing the details of Philadephia’s unimpressive record at Scotiabank Place via Twitter and ignoring the likelihood that Sergei Bobrovsky gets the nod in nets, I’ll pick Chris Pronger and the Flyers for the win. Speaking of Pronger, hopefully he doesn’t offer up some inspirational words for Sean Couturier, another prospect who was overlooked by the Senators organization. (Note: Fortunately, Zibanejad didn’t offer up some quote on draft day like, “I’m glad I got drafted sixth, because no one remembers number eight.”)

On paper this is another mismatch but three things having me calling for the upset. Washington should be a confidence builder, the Sens have played the Flyers tough at home, and the pride factor. The players will be motivated for a better home ice showing for their fans after the Avalanche debacle.

A lot of good things shown last game against the Capitals, but I still don’t know which Ottawa Senators will show up on a given night. With that in mind, I’ve got to go with the odds and pick a Flyers win.

Nice effort by the lads on Saturday but this will likely be a recurring theme this year; not enough to get over the top against better teams even when they play well. Expect the same thing tonight against the Flyers.

Sens haven’t lost at home to the Flyers since the 2007-08 season and have only lost four games to them in this rink since 1999. Probably means nothing with a lineup this young, but I’ll still take the Senators, mostly because they’re due for some good luck.

The team vs. team record would be nice if all the players, coaches and management had stayed the same. They have not, so you can throw that out of the window.
The biggest positive for this game is that Anderson is out with “personal problems” (bruised ego, as the Sportsnet tag on Spezza once said?) and thus our goaltending is tremendously improved. Senators will lose, but that’s not a bad thing seeing that Winnipeg is now at two points.
Flyers 3 – Senators 2. Hopefully not in OT since that would jeapordize “Fail for Nail.”
Why isn’t “Chirp” weighing-in on this panel?!
