Ottawa Senators (17-27-8) at New York Islanders (16-28-7)

The Senators and Islanders are in a race to the bottom…the only question is, who wants it more? Okay, neither team wants the ignominy of finishing dead last in the NHL, but someone has to do it. Sadly, it appears the Islanders are the more talented team at this point. Jason Spezza will help the Senators, but keep in mind he’ll probably need a few games to get back in the groove. I’ll take the Isles at home.

‘The Mule’ Franzen is one of many NHLers who wishes his team could play the Ottawa Senators every night. But the Senators? They wish they could play the Islanders every night. Seems to be the one team they can handle. Let’s try them again here.

With Spezza returning to the lineup, I would have said that the Sens could have chased DiPietro from the lineup but apparently Brent Johnson beat them to the punch. I guess the Isles are accustomed to playing without their #1 goalie but it’s not like there’s Nabokov waiting in the wings.

This is a huge game for Tank Army, with last place now within our grasp. However, with Spezza coming back and coming off a game with the Wings in which they showed a pulse, I have a feeling the Sens will find a way to screw this up and finally win.

Losing streaks don’t last forever. With Jason Spezza returning to the lineup, Ottawa should have a good boost of energy, and even if he isn’t able to manufacture offence in his first game back, all of Milan Michalek, Alex Kovalev, and Peter Regin have been playing good hockey of late. Defence remains a concern, but against the Islanders it’s not quite as serious as with the Red Wings.

The run and gun game against the Wings might have loosened the collective grip a little, and with Spezza back, the time is right for Ottawa to end the losing streak. If they don’t win tonight, when is it going to happen?
