Ottawa Senators (16-19-5) at Chicago Blackhawks (21-18-3)

I really did lean hard towards picking the Senators in this one. Sure, they’re facing the defending Cup champs in a different time zone, but it’s been an emotional week and that could fire this bunch up. There are too many factors working against them, however, not the least of which is an inability to keep the puck out of their own net on the road. This could be the first step towards a major shakeup in the capital.

I do expect a better effort from the Senators than we saw against the Leafs (OK, not saying much), but I also expect the Blackhawks will be too much for Ottawa. Can the boys win one for Cory? Would be nice, but I doubt it.

For some reason, I’m envisioning this as a high-scoring game. Yes, the Sens desperately need wins to get back in the playoff hunt and to save some jobs. But the odds are stacked against them in a road game against the defending Cup champs.

I was really tempted to pick the Sens to win this one because I figure that not too many of my esteemed panelists will. That being said, if Bryan Murray can’t give Cory Clouston a vote of confidence, how much confidence can the players have for their coach at this point? I’ll play this one safe and pick the defending Stanley Cup champions.

You’d think that the Sens would have no chance in this game but maybe, just maybe, they’ve had their pride booted around enough this week to put together a solid effort. Yeah, maybe, but I’m not putting any money on it.

I could be optimistic, but there’s too much going wrong. Let the free-fall continue.

With everything on the line, the Senators will find a way to win this game. With the extra day in the Windy City, with Luke Richardson back, with jobs on the line, a loss would be too heavy a blow for this team to take. They’ll get it done.
