Pretty soon I’m going to adopt the Costanza method of making picks. I’ll look at the most logical option, then I’ll do the opposite. The way the Senators are playing right now, you never know which team is going to show up. Because they’re on the road in a Western Conference rink, I’ll take them to lose here. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they won in a blowout either. Nothing surprises me with this team anymore.

My 13-year-old says the Senators are a tough team to predict because they aren’t consistently good like a Pittsburgh or consistently bad like the Devils. From the mouths of babes…They are especially logic-resistant because of a tendency to play well against strong teams (good efforts vs. Pitt and Wash recently) and then lay eggs against the Carolinas of the world. For a second straight game they face an opponent that played the night before. For that reason and because Columbus is beatable home and away (sort of like their Toronto and Ottawa opponents) I will try the Sens again here. As if logic matters.

After a flat effort on home ice on Wednesday, the Sens need to win this game in Columbus. This was supposed to be Pascal Leclaire’s homecoming. Now the question is: Will this be Mike Brodeur’s chance to get a start?

I got burned for picking the Hurricanes last game, even though the played the night before in Toronto. I won’t make the same mistake with Columbus this time around.

Maybe Ottawa’s modest winning streak was just a Christmas miracle, because the loss to the ‘Canes was a big setback and it’s anyone’s guess how Brian Elliot will play on any given night. At this point, a loss seems more like a safe bet.
