Calgary Flames (18-16-4) at Ottawa Senators (17-15-5)

You know you’re in trouble when you’re tied with Ian Mendes. I need the Senators to bail me out here. They had two days to think about their disappointing 6-2 loss to the slumping Montreal Canadiens, but that had more to do with goaltending than anything else. They should still be a confident group after some solid play last week and will come out with a strong bounce-back effort.

I will look for a rebound after that fiasco against Montreal.

The Flames are playing on back-to-back nights, while the Sens will have had 72 hours to stew on their 6-2 loss to the Habs. Craig Anderson has been really good in games after he’s been pulled this season and I would expect that trend to continue on Friday night.

Even though the Senators have played two stinkers in a row, I’ll choose not to ignore Ottawa’s 4-0 record in games that follow ones in which Craig Anderson or Alex Auld have been pulled.

Two things. The Sens have shown a great ability to bounce back from poor outings. The Flames played last night on Long Island.

The Senators are beginning a stretch of winnable games with one at home against Calgary, and they’re going to need to get started early in order to keep up with the pack in the Eastern Conference. The Flames are on a tear right now, but they’ll be on the second end of a back-to-back, and there’s travel involved in there, too.

Calgary is suddenly playing quite well but the Sens should want to redeem themselves after a terrible effort last game. Also, Mr. Mendes was nice enough to point out the other day that Anderson is usually very good the next game after he throws up a stinker, which he sure did against the Habs. Hopefully, the turkey has now worn off.

After an ugly loss the Senators should be ready to play this one and a big night from the top line is just around the corner. It would be good timing for Alfie to hit that 400 goal milestone.
