Ottawa Senators (19-11-6) at Buffalo Sabres (14-17-6)

Everything about this game screams victory for Ottawa. Big victory. After the Calgary Flames cut bait on their season at the trade deadline, the Edmonton Oilers lit them up 8-2, and the Sabres are in the same situation. The Senators are stumbling a bit and need a win against an Eastern Conference bottom-dweller. If Craig Anderson is back, well, he’s the best goalie in the league this season. And if not, Robin Lehner will be hyper-motivated to show the Senators they made the right choice by shipping Ben Bishop to Tampa. And for all those reasons, I have to take the Sabres. I’m running out of racetrack here.

I always think you should be wary of teams that unload at the deadline. Remember how good Ottawa was after cleaning house two years ago…

The Senators have lost two in a row and desperately need to pick up two points to get this road trip back on track. Playing a Sabres team that they have not lost in regulation to in their past 7 games — Buffalo’s last win in regulation vs Ottawa came on November 11th, 2011 — should help.

Hat trick for Conacher! Okay, fine, maybe not, but the Sens have got to bounce back against the Sabres and win a game they should win.

The Sabres are like comfort food to the Senators. When things look bad and you’re feeling down and out, there’s always potato chips. And for the Sens, there’s always the Sabres to beat up on.
