Washington Capitals (18-12-4) at Ottawa Senators (14-16-4)

The Washington Capitals will be particularly desperate, given their long losing streak and the fact jobs are probably on the line at this point. The Caps are playing on back-to-back nights, but had a good outing against the Boston Bruins Saturday and will be looking to carry that momentum over. That, combined with Brian Elliott’s struggles, lead me to believe Washington’s turnaround will begin in Ottawa.

Is Boudreau one loss to the Senators away from being fired? Something has to give. Let’s find out if the Caps want to play for this coach.

The Capitals are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. In the past, they’ve been criticized for piling up points in the regular season — only to fail in the playoffs. This year, they are slumping through the regular season, and the critics are out in full force. This game is a total toss-up, as the Sens have looked inconsistent at best lately. I’ll take Washington on a hunch and nothing more.

Now that Ottawa’s goalscoring problems seem resolved, they can’t seem to keep the puck out of the net. Fitting. I can’t wait to see how HBO spins the result in their 24/7 series.

You could argue this one either way, but I just finished watching miracle on 34th St., so what the hell!

The picking seems ripe for the Senators to upset the Capitals right now. Ottawa’s on a bit of a run right now — or what qualifies as a run for the Sens — with points in four straight games, while the Capitals are one of few teams with a worse record than the Senators in the last ten games.

This is the battle of two teams with some of the worst luck in hockey right now. After watching the first episode of 24/7 on HBO, it feels strange to pick the Caps to win anything, but with both Senators goalies banged up, this looks like the perfect game for Washington to get back on track. The Senators are showing heart lately, but they’re under some kind of hex that keeps getting stronger. Bring in the shrinks.
