Boston Bruins (19-9-1) at Ottawa Senators (14-13-4)

The Senators continue to come up with unexpected victories — like Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over the Sabres in Buffalo — but the Bruins are so far out of their league, I’d still pick Boston to win even if I suspected Ottawa had another surprise up its sleeve. The Bruins are just too deep, and Tim Thomas is just too good at Scotiabank Place.

Isn’t every day one gets to pick the Cup champs and so I will.

There’s a chance Zdeno Chara plays on Wednesday, but even if he doesn’t, the Bruins are deeper than most teams in the conference.

The loss of Gonchar, Kuba and potentially the NHL’s leading goal scorer will be too much to overcome. Especially since Tim Thomas is getting the nod in nets.

Coming off a gutsy 3-2 OT win in Buffalo, I hope the Sens enjoyed it. Michalek went down and injuries to Gonchar and Kuba forced Maclean to play the hell out of Karlsson, Cowen and Phillips. Despite also playing last night, and sans Chara, no way the Sens beat the champs one night later.

The Senators caught me off guard with last night’s win, but I think the Bruins will catch the Senators off-guard tonight. Especially if Milan Michalek’s injury is serious.

The Sens surprised me by squeaking out that OT win against the Sabres but I can’t see them doing that again, one night later, against Boston. Especially if they continue to throw away the puck like Kim Kardashian throws away husbands. No chance, no how this time out.
Record: 23-8
Exact scores predicted: 1
Jeremy Milks, writer/editor, Black Aces blog

Gut check time. Not for Ottawa but for me. Going on a hunch. Sens will knock off the Bruins without even having to make a third period comeback. Now that’s a bold (and possibly foolish) prediction.
Record: 18-13

Although I don’t really believe the Sens can pull out a win against the Cup Champs under the given circumstances, the Kardiac Kids seem to have a knack for pulling off surprises.
Maybe the Bruins take the night off thinking the same thoughts that all of the esteemed experts on the Prediction Panel (with the exception of Jeremy Milks that is) and the Kids slam in three goals before the B’s wake up and decide that maybe it’s not going to be the cake-walk everyone thought.
Stranger things have happened. And that’s why they play the games, despite the foregone conclusions.
