Ottawa Senators (12-10-2) at Dallas Stars (14-9-1)

Another close one here. The Stars are without starting goalie Kari Lehtonen, who led the league in wins for most of the first quarter of the season. Taking his place is Andrew Raycroft, who won rookie of the year eons ago and proceeded to be terrible at goaltending (he has one win in five starts this season). While that alone should push me towards a Senators pick, I have to give the edge to Dallas at home.

Wasn’t pretty or by the book, but the Sens took care of business against Carolina and Winnipeg. Gets tougher here against one of the hardest working teams in the west, even if they are coming off a rough patch. In fact, if Lehtonen were healthy and starting in goal, I’d pick Dallas in a heartbeat here, but seeing Raycroft in net gives me pause. I’ll try the Stars, but this one could go either way.

I’m a die-hard Cowboys fan, so I can’t pick against Dallas down here.

Tough one to call. Ottawa’s a little banged up and Dallas is without its number one goaltender. I’ll cross my fingers that with no Lehtonen, the Stars will let it in.

With Filip Kuba likely out of the lineup, the Senators will have a lot of minutes (over 20 per game, on average) to spread between a lot of young defenders. Although Dallas isn’t the league’s strongest offensive team, and they have a pathetic powerplay conversion rate (just 11 per cent), I think they’ll manage to put up some offence against the Senators — but with Andrew Raycroft as the last line of defence (Kari Lehtonen is out with a groin injury), they’ll likely have a hard time winning even with a few goals in their favour.

Dallas, like Ottawa, is having a surprising season. But the road is where the playoffs are made. Look for another big game from Z. Smith.

Ottawa seems to rack their wins in bunches and they have a good chance to eke out another one against a Dallas team that’s been a little miserable lately. It’ll help that the Stars aren’t very familiar with a lot of the younger Sens.
