Ottawa Senators (11-10-2) at Winnipeg Jets (9-10-4)

This is a tough one to pick, considering I had these teams finishing last and second-last at the start of the season. Well, they’re still within striking distance of each other (both have surprised by posting .500-ish records), but their battle is taking place a little higher up in the standings. Since I don’t really see much separating them, I’ll have to go with the home team here.

This one is tougher than it looks. The Jets have been very good on home ice (victories over TBay, Washington and Philly in their most recent three at home).  I expect the Senators to skate better than they did against the Hurricanes, who probably deserved a better fate here on Sunday. This is Winnipeg’s first game back after three roadies, so Ottawa might just catch them at a good time.

I have a feeling Jason Spezza is about to go on a little offensive tear now, after his two-goal performance against the Hurricanes. The Sens have done a good job this season of beating the teams that are below them in the standings and Winnipeg falls into the category.

Ottawa’s mild success during their last road trip makes me a bit skeptical of this pick, however, the Jets usually play well at home.

Tough one to call. Not much to really choose between these two teams so far. It was close for most of the game in their previous meeting. Flipping a coin here.

The Senators want to get their road trip started off right, especially with the pretty good (albeit falling fast) Dallas Stars and the sure-to-be-fired-up Washington Capitals right around the corner. The Jets should be motivated, too, but with a few days off while they wait at home, I like the Sens’ chances.

Ottawa won’t be there reason the Jets make .500 this season.  Spezza has found the lamp, expect him to continue the lighting against Winnipeg. Would the real Bobby Butler please stand up?

With Filatov and Rundblad back in the lineup, the Sens had a fresh look and that should give them a boost for at least one more game. Spezza is a streaky goal scorer and that’s bad news for the defensively-challenged Jets.
