They’ve handled Habs pretty well over the last year or so.

Whichever team loses, I can guarantee that their Norris Trophy-winning defenceman will be a lightning rod for criticism.

No Pageau? No problem. After their playoff series loss to the Sens last season fuelled the perception of the Habs being too soft to win, Ottawa will win this because Montreal will be too busy trying to make amends the past — getting away from their game and overemphasizing the importance of a physical tone.

It hasn’t been pretty, but you can see signs of Ottawa’s team game coming around. I’m also banking on the Habs overreacting physically after what happened in the playoffs last spring. Focus might be an issue.

I don’t think the Senators are quite out of the woods yet. Although the Habs haven’t been world-beaters (by any measure) this season and I do think the Senators are a better team, Montreal will be amped up for this one and Ottawa’s still got some issues to work out.
Record: 7-8

Hard one to pick because there’s not much space between these two teams, but I’ll take MacLean and Karlsson over Therrien and Subban anyday. It’s too bad the coaches don’t lace them up.

Montreal will certainly be looking to atone for the embarrassing loss to the Senators in the playoffs. In the series deciding game, Ottawa decided to run up the score by allowing offensive threats like Matt Kassian (2 assists) to stay on the ice in the dying minutes. I don’t recall the exact quote, but I believe Michel Therrien accused Paul MacLean of having a “lack of civility.” But none of that matters because Douglas Murray has been getting more playing time than Subban.
Record: 8-7
