Montreal Canadiens (4-5-2) at Ottawa Senators (7-6-0)

The Senators have a tough week coming up, one that I think will probably bring them back to earth. After facing the Habs, they take on the Sabres, Rangers and Sabres again. Maybe they’ll surprise me by stringing together a few more wins, but I think they’re way overdue for a significant setback. You can’t play as loose defensively as they do and keep getting away with it.

I’m going to try Montreal here. They seem to have settled down a bit (after they got rid of that troublemaker – ha! – Perry Pearn), and Price has been better lately.

Did you know that the Habs are 13-0 under Jacques Martin after the bye week? Oh wait – maybe that’s Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles. In any case, the Habs will be ready for this one after not playing for a week. And the last time they came to Ottawa on a Friday night, they skated away with a 7-1 win.

Every time that we’ve been asked to make our weekend predictions for back-to-back games, I’ve played it safe. Rather than try to guess which games the Senators would probably split, I’ve picked the Senators to lose both games. So that’s what I’m doing now.

We knew this team wasn’t as good as the one on a six-game roll. We’ll see what it really is over the next month. Didn’t like Perry Pearn firing, so on principle alone, I can’t take the Habs.

The Habs are rolling, and it’s due in large part to Carey Price getting his groove back. It’ll take a while before the Senators can put together a winning streak like the one they’re coming off of, I think.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Ottawa’s in for a little reality check here over the next few games. The Sens are facing better competition this week, without Alfie, starting with MTL, who are on a little streak of their own. It could go either way but my gut tells me the Habs sneak this one out.

If the Spezza line stays cold, there’s not much spark left in the lineup with the captain on the shelf. It also doesn’t help they’ll be playing a road game in their own arena.
