Puempel says goodbye to Peterborough

If, as expected, the Ottawa Senators send Matt Puempel back to junior during training camp, he’ll have a new home.

Puempel’s Ontario Hockey League rights were traded to the Kitchener Rangers from the Peterborough Petes on Wednesday, in exchange for prospect Zach Lorenz and second round OHL draft picks in 2014 and 2016.

Puempel scored 17 goals and 16 assists in an injury-shortened 30 games with Peterborough last season and scored one goal in nine games when promoted to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League following the end of Peterborough’s season.

Puempel, selected by the Senators in the first round (24th overall) of the 2011 entry draft, had asked Peterborough management for a trade to Kitchener, according to the Peterborough Examiner.
