Imagine the implications his hefty contract would have on this team. One way or another we had to rebuild, and his contract would have eaten away at money that would be needed to keep our young prospects when they became RFAs. He did us a favour. REALLY.
@BB12 that contact would have done nothing to the current roster, we barely made the cap floor this year, please get your facts right http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=23
this year we have almost 9.5mil free and next year we lose the contacts of Kuba, Alfie’s extra, Cheechoo, Emery
other than Karlsson nobody should be getting much more money, these are all kids, Heatley was putting in 50 goals before he cried to leave
SensFan says:other than Karlsson nobody should be getting much more money,
The only good thing about Karlsson is he is not paired up with Gonchar anymore other wise it would be a five on three with the way they are playing in the first two games.
As for Heatley, it wasn’t so much as leaving Ottawa, it was the way he left. Waited until he got his bonus money then left whined his way out of Ottawa. Total NON PROFESSIONAL character.
BTW he had not scored 50 goals in last two seasons with Ottawa and continues to struggle scoring more than 40 goals in a season.
Glad he is gone and giving up and coming players a chance. Now we need to get rid of Gonchar and Kuba to complete the sweep of duds on the team.
Dear SensFan, I guess you were just looking at the short-term “facts.” Heatley’s contract ends following the 2013-2014 season. Consider the situation we’ll be in FOLLOWING this year by looking at the projected 2012-13 & 2013-14 roster salaries. My comment wasn’t for this season, or last, but for the upcoming ones. Now admittedly we could let the RFAs leave, and we don’t have to re-sign the UFAs. We could use players who are playing junior or in Binghamton or overseas this year and use them in Ottawa next year, so the salary cap hit could be even lower, but there is the opportunity/option to re-sign current players to more money if they prove they are worth an increase of cash, for example Nick Foligno, Nikita Filatov, Peter Regin, Stephane Da Costa, among others. The point is we have the luxury/option to re-sign our projected RFAs to more money and bring in some talented free-agents. It’s a bit harder to do with a cap hit in Dany Heatley, no? What happens with some teams is they have money tied into aging “superstars” and cannot pay for their rising talents. And as GaryS pointed out, Erik Karlsson will be looking for a big contract next year, and with the way trends go a long-term deal. You are correct though, we are nowhere near the ceiling, but that’s a position to be envious of when trying to build a youthful team.
Furthermore, if you have a look, Heatley scored only 41 goals in 2007-08, and even less with 39 goals in 2008-09. Not 50 goals you claimed he scored “before he cried to leave.”
The guy simply wanted out of Ottawa because he was fed up with the likes of Murray! He kept seeing imcompetent Team destruction taking place as we got closer and closer to the Playoffs every year.
Don’t blame the guy. I am sure other Sens would prefer to be playing somewhere else. We were forced to rebuild only because we were so thoroughly dismantled to begin with.
If you remember we were a pretty good Team a few years ago!
Dany who?

Those are just the “facts” straight up.
I don’t really care about anything Senators related. They are pathetic.
