Cowen surgery leaves ‘big hole to fill’

At 6-5 and 230 pounds, Jared Cowen is an intimidating presence for opponents.

Now that he’s likely gone for the season, scheduled for a hip surgery on Saturday that will likely sideline him for four to six months, he also leaves a gaping void for the Ottawa Senators to fill.

Just ask fellow Senators defenceman Chris Phillips..

“That hurts for sure,” Phillips said following a skate with fellow locked out players Wednesday. “He’s a guy that, even though he is young, stepped up and played a lot of minutes for us and was a big part of our team. It’s a big hole to fill. You can always flip that around and say, ‘yeah, it’s going to give an opportunity for someone else to step in, but there’s no doubt that he’ll be missed.”

Cowen scored five goals and 12 assists in his 2011-12 rookie season and averaged 18:53 of ice time per game, fourth among Senators defencemen, behind Erik Karlsson, Filip Kuba and Phillips.
