Jason Spezza will not be going to Pittsburgh for the start of the second round of the playoffs Tuesday.
“He’s going to stay here and skate with Luke (Richardson) and the Black Aces,” Senators coach Paul MacLean said early Monday afternoon, before the rest of the team left Ottawa for Game 1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday. “He’ll get better skates and a better opportunity to continue to progress in his rehab.”
MacLean says everything else is up in the air, including whether Spezza could possibly make the trip to Pittsburgh for Game 2 – whenever that is.
The full schedule won’t be released until after the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs and the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers complete the Game Seven in their series Monday night.
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is ready to roll.
“It’s good, it gives us something to target,” he said about the Tuesday start. “We don’t mind practicing, but playing games at this time of the year, that’s what it’s all about. We’ve had a good rest and should be fresh and ready to go (Tuesday).”
Alfredsson recognizes the Senators are considered underdogs, but there’s a belief in the dressing room that they can knock off the Penguins.
“We’ve kind of worked ourselves in here and once here, you don’t think anything is impossible,” he said. “We think we can give the Pittsburgh team a tough run and even win this series. But we also respect them and their abilities and what they’ve shown this year and it’s going to take an effort from everybody to have a chance.”
