Michalek hopes to skate next week

Milan Michalek says he could be back on the ice next week, practicing with his locked out Ottawa Senators teammates.

Michalek had abdominal surgery in Philadelphia and the Senators said that the rehabilitation was expected to take between four to six weeks. Michalek confirmed that he’s on schedule, if not ahead of pace, after showing up at the Bell Sensplex for a peak at his teammates’ informal skate.

“I feel pretty good,” Michalek told The Citizen Tuesday. “It was 10 days ago and now everything is good. It was a small surgery.”

Michalek has served as a first-line finisher for centre Jason Spezza and scored a career high 35 goals and 25 assists in 77 games with the Senators last season.

His short-term goal is to get back on the ice with Senators players. Once he starts feeling better, however, he might consider other options.

“The first thing I want to do is get 100 per cent healthy,” he said. “But if the (lockout) continues, I might go to play in Europe, maybe back to the Czech Republic and my hometown.”
