Karlsson on coffee: ‘I know what’s good’

On Friday, Erik Karlsson unveiled the EK65 blend of coffee, which will be sold at Bridgehead cafes with profits going to the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa. Anyone who follows the speedy defenceman on Twitter knows he loves his cup, or many cups, of coffee. Here’s what he had to say Saturday about his new favourite brew.

Q: How much coffee do you drink a day?

Erik Karlsson: I don’t know, probably too much. No, I drink a lot.

Q: It’s also a good cause though, right?

EK: Yeah, I think it’s a great thing to do that I’m passionate about and care about and I’m going to give whatever I can to make it work, and hopefully people like it as much as I do and it turns into a good thing.

Q: Would you consider yourself a coffee expert?

EK: (Laughs) No, my palette sucks — I know what’s good and what’s not, that’s pretty much it. What it tastes like, I have no clue.

Q: What’s the top coffee in Sweden?

EK: Ooo … I don’t know, what do you say? (looks over at Swedish hockey broadcaster Marie Lehmann)

ML: Gevalia?

EK: Yeah, that’s a pretty solid one. I like that. We have good coffee back home, I would say.

Q: Are you a cream and sugar kind of guy?

EK: No, straight. Sometimes when I drink a lot, I add a bit of milk for the good ol’ stomach here.
