DETROIT — Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock opened his pre-game press briefing late Friday morning by asking, “how about them Tigers?”
Truth be told, the Red Wings have taken a back seat to the Detroit Tigers in Motor City, especially after the Tigers advanced to the American League championship series with a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the divisional playoff series Thursday.
Babcock sounded almost as excited about the Tigers success as he does with Red Wings victories.
“I think it’s fantastic,” he said, saving most of his praise for relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit, who pitched his way out of a bases loaded situation in the eighth inning to preserve the Tigers one-run lead.
“When he dug in there, when things were going bad. Things go bad every night in every game. Some guys dig in and some guys are mentally weak and give in. When the bases are loaded and he walks a guy, you never know what’s going to happen. He digs in and makes it happen.
“To me, that’s what winning is all about. You just scratch and claw. You find a way. That’s the same in our league. It’s the same in every league. It doesn’t matter what sport. To me, when you’re involved in pro sports, that part is exhilerating. That’s how you win.”
