Hartsburg to have heart surgery

Everett Silvertips head coach Craig Hartsburg — former head coach of the Ottawa Senators — will undergo heart surgery on Wednesday.

Hartsburg was diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm. A heart catheterization is to be performed Wednesday, with surgery to follow in the weeks to come. He is expected to be sidelined through the first half of the WHL season.

In the interim, associate head coach Jay Varady will run the Silvertips’ bench, along with assistant coach Chris Hartsburg, Jr. (Craig’s son).

“The most important thing at this time is for Craig to get healthy,” Silvertips vice-president and general manager Doug Soetaert said in a prepared statement. “We’re all in full support of the Hartsburg family and look forward to Craig’s full recovery.”

Hartsburg is in his second season as the Silvertips’ head coach. Hartsburg coached the Senators in 2008-09, before being replaced by current head coach Cory Clouston.
