Former Bingo defenceman Derek Smith happy with Flames

Lining up on the Flames blue line on Tuesday was Derek Smith, who helped the Binghamton Senators to the AHL championship last spring and then signed as a free agent with the Flames last summer when he was unwanted by the Senators.
He was having trouble explaining the feeling of facing many of his old teammates on Tuesday.
“I don’t funny is the right word,” he said.
“Exciting. I think it was just time to move on, for both sides, and it’s worked out well for me.
I have a lot of friends in the other dressing room. It’ll be nice to see them on the ice but both teams will be going after the two points. You have to try not let your friendship get in the way of anything.”
