Elliott Starts, Ruutu Sits

It might have seemed a surprise that Senators coach Cory Clouston handed Monday’s start to Brian Elliott, just two nights after he got pulled in Long Island.

But Clouston said the reasoning was simple: Elliott’s a veteran and he has to find his game.

“He’s a veteran, we’re playing against arguably the best team in the NHL, and Brian has to play like a veteran,” said Clouston.

“It’s a situation where obviously he hasn’t played well, but we need him to step it up and be the goalie he was not too long ago.”

Elliott took a 12-game losing streak into the game.

Otherwise, there were no other changes, which meant that Jarkko Ruutu (again) and Matt Carkner didn’t dress.

For Ruutu, that has to be viewed as a slap in the face. He started his career in Vancouver after he was drafted by the Canucks in 1998, and was a very popular player here.
