Binghamton wins season opener

Robin Lehner made 35 saves, while Jakob Silfverberg and Hugh Jessiman scored third period goals to lift the Binghamton Senators to a 2-1 season opening win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday.

After a scoreless first period, in which Lehner stopped all 17 shots he faced, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton opened the scoring in the second on a goal from Trevor Smith.

Silfverberg, who is expected to have a shot at a first-line winger spot with the Ottawa Senators if there is an NHL season, tied the game early in the third period. Jessiman, the 6-6, 235-pound AHL journeyman, then put Binghamton ahead for good following a great set-up from Mike Hoffman. Binghamton’s next game comes Tuesday against the Rochester Americans.
