Odds are the Ottawa Senators will retire Daniel Alfredsson’s jersey at some point down the line.

Team owner Eugene Melnyk, appearing on TSN prior to Sunday night’s game at Canadian Tire Centre between the Senators and Alfredsson’s new team, the Detroit Red Wings, essentially confirmed the franchise will bestow that honour on its erstwhile captain.

“If I was a betting man, I’d bet on it,” Melnyk said when asked about the jersey retirement after hedging slightly by saying “nothing’s a gimme.”

Given Melnyk is big into horse racing and has probably placed a wager or two in his lifetime, that seems like a pretty sure thing.

Melnyk acknowledged some of this summer’s wounds have healed, adding he would have shaken Alfredsson’s hand in person if he wasn’t bound by his daughters’ schedules in Barbados, where he appeared from via video link.

Alfredsson left the Senators after 17 seasons over a financial disagreement leading up to NHL free agency.
