Battle of Ontario heats up after the Ice Age

TORONTO – With both the Senators and the Maple Leafs in the playoff race, this is the first time in many years that the Battle of Ontario has meant anything.
The Maple Leafs haven’t made the playoffs since 2003-04, when they went on to beat the Senators in the first round (and then loss to the Flyers in six).
Asked if it was hard to believe that the rivalry probably peaked about 10 years ago, Daniel Alfredsson, 39, said no.
“A lot of things don’t seem like 10 years ago to me,” he said.
“But it’s great. A lot of Canadian teams have been playing well, and that’s what we want.
“And playing Toronto, it is has always been a good rivalry. Maybe not as heated as it was in the past, but with both teams in the playoff race, the games are going to be more intense.
“The points are important to both teams. These are the grind days of the schedule.
“We hope to find ways to continue to get points.”
