B-Sens need to be better

HOUSTON — After splitting the first two games of the American Hockey League Calder Cup final with the Binghamton Senators, Houston Aeros coach Mike Yeo said he feels his team has been the better of the two.

And Senators coach Kurt Kleinendorst, whose team evened the series with a 2-1 overtime win on Saturday night, agrees.

“I don’t love us right now,” said Kleinendorst coach of the Ottawa Senators’ AHL affiliate. “I know my team, and I know what we do when we’re playing well. Even though we battled hard, we just don’t look crisp to me.

“I know (the Aeros) are doing a nice job, I know they are strong with the puck, I know they are good with their sticks, but we have played other teams that are strong on the puck and good with their sticks.

“For me, I am just relieved that we got out of here with a win.”

The Senators won Saturday because 19-year-old goalie Robin Lehner made several great saves late in the second period and throughout the final 20 minutes. The Aeros outshot Binghamton 10-3 in the third.

“We let them off the hook because we turned pucks over and we turned this more into a back-and-forth kind of game,” said Yeo. “We have to be committed to playing that kind of game, making them go back and force them to deal with our forecheck, force them to deal with our physicality.”

Fatigue also may have been a factor for Houston Saturday. The Aeros played their sixth game in 12 days. The Senators are well-rested and have played just two games in the past 10 days.

“The couple of days that we have here are going to be huge for our team, there is no question about that,” said Yeo.

The teams will be in Binghamton for the next three games, but Game 3 won’t be until Wednesday night at 7:05. Games 4 and 5 will be Friday and Saturday.
