The Colorado Avalanche have selected Halifax Mooseheads Nathan MacKinnon first overall at the NHL Draft.

That wasn’t a surprise, given the Avs had been publicly hinting they’d take the talented centre.

What happened next was. Seth Jones, a defenceman considered by many to be the best player available in the draft, slipped to the Nashville Predators at No. 4 after the Florida Panthers stunned the New Jersey crowd by taking Finnish centre Aleksander Barkov second and Tampa Bay followed up with MacKinnon’s Halifax teammate Jonathan Drouin third.
