Anderson likely to start against Washington

Although Ottawa Senators coach Paul MacLean won’t announce his starting goaltender until Wednesday morning, all signs indicate that Craig Anderson will get the call against the Washington Capitals Wednesday night.

Anderson served as a back-up to Robin Lehner for Sunday’s 4-1 loss to the Carolina and Saturday’s 4-2 win over Detroit.

“I just stops and do what I’m told,” Anderson said, with a wide smile when asked if he was starting. “Be ready to play. That’s the bottom line, whether you’re supposed to play or not supposed to play. You have to be ready to play and be ready for the guys.”

Anderson owns a record of 5-7-2, with a goals against average of 3.31 and a save percentage of .900 and hasn’t played since a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 20.

While the Senators need Anderson to be better, the team around him also needs to improve everywhere and needs to control momentum swings better.

“There’s probably no explanation, at least no rational one,” Anderson said of the Senators inconsistency. “It’s one of those things where you just don’t know. Some nights…you know, we’re human. You can’t be 100 per cent full tilt at all times. It’s not in the human body.”

The good news for the Senators is that defenceman Mark Borowiecki was back on the ice for practice, after suffering a stiff neck when hit from behind by Carolina’s Kevin Westgarth.

Borowiecki says he feels healthy and is ready to play, if MacLean chooses to use him. Westgarth, meanwhile, has a hearing with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan on Tuesday afternoon, where it’s possible he will receive a suspension for the hit.

MacLean says he will wait until Wednesday to announce possible changes. There has been some speculation that Colin Greening, who has gone scoreless this season, could be a healthy scratch.
