Ottawa Senators veteran Daniel Alfredsson and former Senators defenceman Zdeno Chara, now with the Boston Bruins, have been named captains for the NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa later this month.

Alfredsson and Chara will choose their teams via fantasy draft on Jan. 26, two days before the actual game takes place.

Both men are captains of their respective teams.

The Alfredsson pick was a no-brainer for the NHL, given how hard fans here worked to have him voted onto the starting lineup for the annual celebration. It’s viewed as something of a swan song for the 39-year-old, who earlier this season was contemplating retirement at the end of this campaign.

The Senators’ recent resurgence may have delayed that decision, however.

Chara was a star with the Senators before signing as a free agent with the Bruins prior to the 2006-2007 season. He has since picked up a Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman and last spring helped lead his team to the Stanley Cup.
