36 players to attend Sens development camp, starts Tuesday

By Allen Panzeri

If the future looks bright for the Ottawa Senators, and even the most cynical would have to admit that it does, it’ll be on display here through Monday as 36 players – including the 10 drafted last weekend in St. Paul – will attend the team’s annual development camp.
The team has invited three goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 23 forwards.
For the first time, fans will also get a chance to see Swedish defenceman David Rundblad, who was acquired in a trade from the St. Louis Blue last summer and is expected to be on the team’s blue line this fall.
This is no word yet whether Russian left wing Nikita Filatov, acquired from the Columbus Blues last weekend, will attend or even visit Ottawa any time soon.
Fans will be able to watch the players during the Tuesday – Sunday (1:30 p.m.) on-ice sessions at the Bell Sensplex, at the five-on-five scrimmage at 7 p.m. on Thursday (following which Senator season ticket holders will get to meet the players), and at Monday’s three-on-three tournament, which begins at 9:45 a.m.
Other than the one-ice sessions, the players will have a full schedule over their five days here:
– off-ice workouts Wednesday through Sunday;
– an outdoor team-building event on Friday;
– a video training session for goaltenders at Dynamic Edge Sports Vision Training Centre (Bell Sensplex)
- a specialized sport nutrition-cooking seminar held by Creative Nutrition specialist Molly Morgan (young players often have terrible diets).
– a “champions” talk with former New York Islanders captain and Hall of Famer Denis Potvin, and Todd Nicholson, who has competed in four Winter Paralympic Games as a member of Canada’s national sledge hockey team;
– a presentation on defensive play from assistant coach Luke Richardson;
Seventeen players in this group attended last year’s development camp, while seven played at least part of the season with the Binghamton Senators, and two played games with the Senators last season (Stephane Da Costa and Patrick Wiercioch).
Twenty-eight were picked by the team in one draft or another and four were selected in the first round (after the three this year, Rundblad is the fourth; he was picked in the first round of the 2009 draft).
